NOTE: All links are separately listed at the end of the document!First is First. OTH stands for “Off the Hook”. It is a weekly radio broadcast, in talk show format, aired on WBAI FM at 7pm (Based in New York). It is hosted primarily by Emmanuel Goldstein, founder of 2600 meetings, and editor of the magazine. The completely voluntary and lose nature of the structure of 2600 meetings, means that universal rules concerning meetings have to be very strict. Therefore usually only Emmanuel himself can authorize a change in rules, to ensure 2600 maintains its ethic. . Traditionally 2600 meetings happen on every first Friday of the month, everywhere in the world. This is because this way, everyone knows it is 2600 day, and there is no confusion, or constant checking of sites involved. Also in the western world, Friday is the last working day of the week, so everyone has the weekend off after the meeting. . I got many complaints in person, while trying to gather like minded people in Egypt, upon introducing the detail of the weekday the meetings were held on. A very common inconvenience for attendees was brought to my attention. . Friday in Egypt is the Holy day, and many attendees have work on Saturday! . Having meetings on a Friday in Egypt, compares to having meetings on a Sunday in the western world! . Due to the volume of email Emmanuel receives, it is extremely difficult to contact him directly, as you could imagine. We’ve attempted contacting him since over a year and half ago now, and heard no response. . For a 2600 meeting to be official, you must have 3 successful consecutive meetings, and email a meeting report after each one. After many months of holding meetings, the only reason we made it on to the “official meetings page” is because we used a script in our website to grab certain pieces of content from their site. At least they check their logs =P. . We tried to ask them for permission to photocopy a 2600 issue and distribute it at a meeting, as there are no stores selling 2600 magazine in Egypt! We heard no response, but we assumed since they believe in freedom of information, and that we were not making money off it, and given the situation, that they would most likely approve. . Then came the issue of wanting to host meetings on the first Thursday of every month, rather than Friday. We emailed him at published, and non public email addresses, left messages with the store assistant, messaged him on IRC, tried messaging others at 2600 in hope. We heard nothing back. . The idea came to me also when I noticed another 2600 start up not too far away from us! We were the first 2600 meeting established in the entire Middle-East. Israel2600 started up, and we noticed two things, and wondered whether they were connected. They chose to hold their monthly meetings every first Thursday of the month, which did not adhere to 2600 rules. They also however did not ever make it to the official meetings page. . So, with Emmanuel being so hard to contact, and him being the only person that could authorize this, we only had one other option. We phoned him up on Wed Nov 30th 2005 on his radio show Off the Hook! It airs at 7pm NY time, and we were on air around 7:45pm NY time. . You will have to listen for all the details, but in short, after some discussion, we got permission to change the 2600 day in the Middle East, under the condition that we can agree with israel2600 on the same day. They have already decided to use Thursday, so that condition is already fulfilled. However, we cannot seem to find evidence of Israel2600 currently existing anymore. If anyone has any info on their status, or any emails we could contact, please contact us! . We also brought some side issues concerning egypt2600 to his attention before we could let him go. We have noted that the payphones page for Egypt on the main 2600 site contains a completely different set to the ones we have in ours! Our ones are scanned images from 2600 magazines, so we assume it is just a matter of them updating, or reducing back-log. . The other issue, was that the voice listing of meetings (a recording of Emmanuel reading a list of the meetings everywhere, available as a sub-option when you phone the 2600 phone number), did not include Egypt! He said it had not been updated in years, and he was surprised it even still existed, which we could understand and found equally humorous. . Conclusion: We finally got the idea of 2600 in Egypt and the Middle East out there. So far, this has to be probably one of two things that will have produced most publicity for us.* . We are excited about getting this privilege, and being able to modify the rules for our part of the world!
